Apostilles for diplomas and transcripts used to study in Germany

For study in Germany, the institution or uni-assist controls the academic format. Not every admission requires an apostille, and apostilling a document in the wrong format will not cure the underlying problem.

University, uni-assist and recognition

First identify who evaluates the file. Some universities accept documents directly; others use uni-assist. The Anabin database helps explain recognition of institutions and degrees, but it does not replace an individual decision.

What uni-assist says about translations

uni-assist asks for certificates in the original language and, where applicable, translations into German or English. Translations must come from authorized translators under its rules; they do not replace the original-language document or required certified copy.

Is an apostille required?

Not automatically. Confirm with the university or authority receiving the record. German Missions in the United States explain that U.S. school transcripts and other state documents can receive apostilles from the respective state when an apostille is required.

Preparing a record that does need an apostille

1. Ask whether the diploma, transcript or both are required.
2. Contact the registrar about signature and sealed-envelope rules.
3. Confirm the eligible certification with the state.
4. Obtain the apostille from the state of origin.
5. Arrange translations and copies without altering the apostilled original.

Certified copies are not ordinary photocopies

German procedures use certified copies under specific rules. A student-signed copy or a notarization the state cannot authenticate may be rejected. Ask whether certification by the university, a notary, consulate or another authority is acceptable.
