Florida Documents for Italian Citizenship: Apostille Checklist for Florida Families

Step 1: identify the document type, not the whole process

Before requesting anything, identify exactly which type of record you need: birth, marriage, death, or divorce. Each is requested from a different office within Florida and can have its own certified-copy format. Don't assume which documents your case needs; confirm with the consulate, comune, or your citizenship professional before starting any request.

Step 2: confirm the correct source within Florida

In Florida, birth and death records come from the state's Bureau of Vital Statistics. Marriage and divorce records, depending on the case, can be requested either from that same Bureau or from the Clerk of Court in the county where the event was recorded, since both offices can issue certified versions. Confirm with your consulate or comune whether they accept either version interchangeably or require a specific one before requesting the copy.

Step 3: request the original certified copy

For any of these documents, Florida requires an original certified copy, not a photocopy or a printout from an online record. Request the copy directly from the appropriate office (the Bureau of Vital Statistics or the county Clerk of Court) and confirm the format apostille requires before paying for the request.

Step 4: process the apostille through the Florida Department of State

Once you have the original certified copy, the apostille is processed through the Florida Department of State.
